Magazine Collage
Flying Inspire
For this experience we made two small collages. I made Flying first and I didn't really have a theme to it, but I liked the color scheme and the birds flying away. The second one I made was Inspire. Even though I didn't have a theme for the first one, I had so much fun making it. So, I wanted to make something that would inspire me and remind me why I wanted to be a teacher in the first place. I hope that it will ready me for school on days when I'm tired and forget the reason why I do it all.
Art Production Experience Reflection
I can document and reflect upon the mini-lessons and art production experiences I completed this semester in ITE 326, Visual Arts, Elementary.
I can create a title for this art experience: Magazine Collage
I can describe the instructional strategies used as a motivation for creating my own work of art:
I was definitely motivated by looking at the examples of collages. I thought they all looked so cool and creative in a variety of ways that I was inspired to make my own just by looking at examples.
I can cite a HCPS III in the Visual Arts and the Benchmark I feel this lesson meets:
HCPS III Benchmark FA.K.1.2 How the Arts are Organized: Use developmentally appropriate art media, tools, and processes
I can list the materials I used:
White construction paper, scissors, glue, magazines, mod podge, beads, puzzles, other miscellaneous odds and ends
I can reflect on my personal involvement in the creative process during this art experience, and how I would inspire my students to feel positive about this experience:
At first I didn't really know what my theme for the collage would be, but when I began the second collage I had an idea to make one that would inspire me before I start the day of school. I only got this idea because I was inspired by a classmate's collage. I would encourage my students to do the same. Not to copy their classmates' work, but to use it as something that might spark an idea.
I can modify this experience to provide art instruction for different grade levels. List 2-3 ways:
1. Younger students: It would be important to carefully select the magazines that students have available to take from since not all magazine content would be age appropriate.
2. Older Students: I would modify this for older students by challenging them to vary their cutting. Instead of cutting straight lines that leave a lot of unnecessary content from magazine, try to cut as close around the picture that they want to cut out. This will be a good opportunity for them to refine their fine motor skills.
I can list 2-3 different ways to integrate other subject matter into this lesson:
1. Oral communication: I think this experience is a great way to build oral communication skills because collages are much more understood when the artist gets the chance to explain what the different elements represent and why they decided to put it there.
2. Language Arts: Students can also make word collages using the words that they cut out from magazines. This can be a creative and fun way for them to practice constructing sentences that make sense out of random words taken from different contexts.
I can list 2-3 teaching skills that I can use as a teacher from this lesson:
1. Providing lots of materials: I think that giving students a variety of materials to work with is exciting for them because they have more options. I want to be able to provide that kind of experience for my students if the resources and budget allow it.
2. Circle Sharing: Once everyone was done we all sat in a circle and explained a little bit about our piece. I would love to use this because it revealed a lot about my classmates and strengthens the sense of community in a class.
